Kuumba: Building Creative Learning Spaces In Dire Times
Wednesday, December 2nd, 7pm
Kuumba is the 6th principle of Kwanzaa, relating to and celebrating creativity in the context of community. Join us for an inspirational and informative discussion with Betsaleel (Bets) Charmelus, a musician, facilitator, educator, community advocate and storyteller.
His work is based on helping others find the answers to the questions they pose within themselves by honoring multiple ways of thinking, acknowledging multiple ways of knowing & empowering multiple ways of learning. Whether in his work as a program director for the anti-violence, music based non-profit Beyond the Bars, facilitating as a music instructor for survivors of sexual trauma with JJPI’s B.O.S.S Program, co-ordinating men’s mental health support groups or aural story-telling in the nationally acclaimed, all-black rock band ill Fated Natives, Bets is passionate about finding & claiming new spaces, building strong, inter-connected communities & exploring the difference between questioning oneself and asking oneself questions.
