Roger Treece's "Orchestration for Vocals" Seminar
An overview of orchestrating for voice.
Saturday, April 22, 2000 at Bellevue Community College.
The Seattle Composers Alliance and the Bellevue Community College Jazz Program
co-sponsored a day-long seminar on the arrangement of works for voice, masterfully presented
by composer/arranger Roger Treece. Roger knows his away around a four-part
harmony, as evidenced by his work with such luminaries as The Manhattan Transfer and
The New York Voices, as well as for nationwide radio and television spots
for Disney, PBS, Microsoft, and McDonald's.
Roger covered the basic characteristics of the voice as an instrument: its individuality,
physical variations, range and register, and the differing qualities of solo and part singers.
He explained timbre variance, head/chest voice, and falsetto methods and ably demonstrated
them with the assistance of his guest, vocalist Carl Conner-Kelly.
Roger also presented the basic concepts of scoring for groups: the ranges of parts, mixing and
blending of voices, voice leading, and comparisons of voicing with traditional instrumentation.
He discussed the requirements of different styles, including jazz, gospel, pop, legitimate choral,
and a cappella. Recorded or live examples thoroughly illustrated all concepts.
