Greetings from the SCA. We’re thrilled to be launching the new year with some exciting news:
Closing the submission for the Second Annual Call for Scores:
On December 14, 2015, we closed for submissions with the expectation of being able announce the finalists by the new year. However, due to the exceptional volume of submissions, we will need some extra time before the finalists will be selected. Thus far, we’ve received scores from throughout the US, Brazil, China, Italy, and more- how exciting! We are expecting to have finalists announced no later than January 16th, as well a date for the concert. Applicants, we wish you the best of luck- so far of the work received, there is certainly some great work to speak of, but our lips are sealed!
Monthly Demo Derby, hosted by Aaron Cadam Samuels:
This month’s demo derby will take place on January 24th at the Seattle Film Institute. The SCA is hosting a score show-and-tell (derby) in the theater at the Seattle Film Institute. This event is free and open to anyone who’d like to talk shop, share their wares, and meet fellow composers in the area.
Filmmakers! Please join us for this rare opportunity to meet local composers and gain a deeper knowledge about what composers do, why we make certain creative choices, and the sheer value that a composer can bring to your work.
Film Composers! You will be given an opportunity to demonstrate a cue (or two, depending upon the length of your work and number of presenters) followed by a brief Q&A with the other attendees. Please bring your work on a flash drive or have your URL handy.
Pure Music Composers! The main thrust of the SCA Derby is music for video, but we welcome pure music as well. You will be given an opportunity to demonstrate a piece (or two, again, depending on the aforementioned factors) followed by a brief Q&A with the other attendees. Please bring your work on a flash drive or have your URL handy.
There will be a sign-up sheet at the event for those wishing to show – first come, first show. Generally you will be allotted around 10 minutes. If you miss a slot for this one, you can reserve your spot for the next one (there will likely be more of these – particularly if we have a waiting list to attend to!).
Ravel Study Groups in 2016 with Ron Jones
For over 37 years, Ron Jones has dedicated himself to the art of craft of composing. Most of his creative work has involved scoring music for TV and Film projects, produced by both major Hollywood studios and independent productions companies. working as a composer for an NBC movie of the week and several network animated TV series, produced by Hanna-Barbera, going on to score several seasons for Star Trek: The Next Generation, Family Guy, Mission: Impossible, The Fairly Oddparents, and the list goes on, including a long list of full-length features.
Ron has been generously hosting a series of Master Classes at his studio, SkyMuse Studios, in Stanwood, and will begin to start holding a score analysis session, called the Ravel Study Group, in the coming months. Stay tuned for further details…
The Seattle Metropolitan Chamber Orchestra 2016 Composition Competition
Building on the success of Seattle Metropolitan Chamber Orchestra’s First International Composition Competition for Young Composers in 2014, SMCO will present two composition prizes in 2016. SMCO will perform the winning works of both competition categories on February 27, 2016 in Seattle, WA. The winner of each category will receive $200 (USD) and a high-quality audio and video recording of the performance. See guidelines and instructions online.
