The Seattle Composers Alliance presents “The Music of The Shawshank Redemption,” a seminar for composers, fans and filmmakers taking place at Soundbridge at Benaroya Hall on Thursday, March 21 from 7:30pm to 9:30pm.

Understated, yet deeply moving, Thomas Newman’s score to The Shawshank Redemption is considered by many to be one of the greatest film scores of the 1990’s. It is revered for both its musical beauty and how well it supports the story and melds effortlessly with Frank Darabont’s masterful film.

Using brief clips from the film, audio from the CD and a few notes on the page, film composer Eric Goetz will attempt to reverse engineer the dramatic decisions that went into this revered score. Though we will glance at some sheet music, an understanding of music is not necessary as the focus of this event is to examine how the music works with the film. This free event will be aimed at fans and filmmakers in addition to musicians and film composers.
